Andras Schiff is one of my favorite classical musicians. I expected much more from this book. My mistake, not Schiff’s. I expected an autobiography. Which this book is not. This is a disjointed collection of writings, liner notes and highly edited notes of conversations. There is an autobiographical section of ad-hoc conversations of selected events, but the section stops early, it is twenty years short - misses the last two decades. A few liner notes of Schiff’s CDs are included, to add pages to this short book. If you get the book, you probably already have those CDs. For me the most interesting parts were Schiff’s thoughts on his favorite composers (amazing how he gets so excited and so upset and disturbed about details in his favorite compositions and their right and wrong interpretations) and especially his political writings (letters). If ever Schiff writes a true autobiography or if someone writes his biography, I hope it covers his life up to 2000 in more detail and also covers the years from 2000. A section of his collaboration with Manfred Eicher would be of special interest.
